Autism is a nonprogressive neurological disorder characterized by language and communication deficits, withdrawal from social contacts, and extreme reactions to changes in the immediate environment.

Asperger's Disorder is a milder variant of Autistic Disorder. Asperger's Disorder and Autistic Disorder are subgroups of a larger diagnostic category. This larger category is called either Autistic Spectrum Disorder or Pervasive Developmental Disorder.
