• Extraneous material – material
not needed. Fluff!
• Apostrophe usage– its / it’s – ONLY use an apostrophe
in “it’s” if IT IS!
•
Awkward sentence – grammatically correct, but awkward! Switch it
up! Reword!
• Subject / verb agreement - The subject and verb
must agree in number: both must be singular, or both must be plural. The subject is the who and the verb is
what they do.So, when you have
a singular subject (one person), you have to match it with a singular
verb form: The cat is missing. When you have a plural subject (more than
one), you must have a plural verb form: The dogs are barking.
•
Topic Sentence – What the paragraph is about. Not always the first
sentence of the paragraph!
• Run – On sentence – 2 sentences that need a (.) to separate
them.
•
General to specific – In writing, make sure you’re specific
about what you say! For instance, if you’re talking about someone
acting weird, what does that mean? Be specific! Describe using details!
•
Chronological Order – 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. If you’re telling
me how to bake a cake, make sure you’ve explained how to crack
the eggs in the mix before you pour it in the pan!
•
Tense – present/past/future. Stick to the same tense in your writing!
Example: He baked a cake and leaves with his friend. In this example,
you’re flipping from past to present. Correct example: He baked
a cake and left with his friend.
